If you’re not local, and do want to drive, be aware that there is no car park. There is limited roadside parking available on Westwoodside, Churwell, LS27 7UQ. Please be considerate of local residents.
There are a number of circular walks that you can do… although some of the paths are buggy-friendly, I’d recommend letting toddlers toddle and babies be carried… there are a number of steps around the area to navigate! You’ll find a map of the woodland below;
Our short 2.5 km route started next to the railway and headed South East through the woodland, we took this path to the furthest point, and turned right down the lane that took us towards the motorway bridge. Instead of crossing, we turned right, cutting through housing to reenter the woodland, we went straight across the path crossroads and back out the woodland to enter Japa Woods. Take the path down to cross Westwood Side until you reach Jubilee Corner, where you can turn left to return to the start. For a slightly longer 4km walk, that takes you under the motorway see this route.
For anyone with train loving children, Churwell Woods has it’s own! It’s only 50p. Have a look at the Facebook page for updates on opening times.
The spaces around Churwell Woods are ideal for children. There are lots of lovely, well- though out activities that connect them with nature, such as pond-dipping, a sensory garden, bird hide, digging and even a mini assault course! Head to Jubilee Corner to find the sensory garden and pond dipping.
