PONTEFRACT LIQUORICE FESTIVAL SATURDAY:
Saturday introduces the festival’s fun-size warm-up with a whole day of fab, free family and community events to get you ready for the main festival day.
Enjoy scene-setting acoustic music as you browse the traditional Saturday market. Get into the party spirit with a selection of fun street entertainment – including some familiar Liquorice faces.
Get creative and take part in craft workshops at the Buttercross! How do you fancy being part of the rich tapestry of Pontefract’s heritage? Now you can, as you contribute to a special embroidered art commission, which will be displayed on Sunday.
Then, round off your busy day with a trip to Pontefract Castle for the return of Proms at the Castle. Enjoy an evening of beautiful music from the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra before the spectacular fireworks finale, all in the historic grounds of Pontefract Castle.
PONTEFRACT LIQUORICE FESTIVAL SUNDAY:
Time for the main event!
First off, the famous food and drink market is back with a bang. Stretching across Market Place, Salter Row, Beastfair and Corn Market, there’ll be something for everyone – from tasty treats to tempt the taste buds (and those with a sweet tooth will really be in their element) to quirky gifts and homeware that you just won’t find anywhere else. It’s a great opportunity to pick up something special for a loved one – or treat yourself!
Music lovers take note: bands will be playing on stage throughout the day. Like Saturday, Sunday will see street performers keeping the crowds entertained as they shop. There will also be family workshops so everyone can get stuck in and come up with a crafty creation – and don’t forget to take a look at the special art commission from Saturday proudly on display!
If all that’s not enough, kids will love having a go on the colourful funfair rides in the town centre.
Then, look out for the parade! Flag-dancers, acrobats, stilt-walkers and more will be making some noise as they make their joyous way from the centre of town to Pontefract Castle for the grand finale – expect music, dancing, confetti, balloon modelling… and there may even be some free sweets.
PONTEFRACT LIQUORICE FESTIVAL FOOD & DRINK TRAIL
Running throughout Saturday and Sunday, for the first time ever, is the Pontefract Liquorice Festival Food & Drink Trail. Food and drink venues all across the town are offering delicious and inventive sweet-themed or liquorice-themed food and drink specially created for the festival.
Plus, discover fascinating facts about liquorice growing in the area and learn why there is so much to celebrate at a liquorice talk or really soak up the festival atmosphere at one of the local pubs or cafes. Liquorice stout is a firm festival favourite!
