Remember all those times as a kid when the postman leaves a leaflet which will spark an interest- it might be boxing, acting, swimming or football. Well, if for your kid it’s singing, I can guarantee you that it’s the best thing that could have happened to them.
So why should you let your child start singing?
Singing has always been a way that musicians express themselves to the world. Singing will encourage your child to express their emotions and sharpens their ability to communicate. Not only this, but singing has been proven to strengthen the memory muscle. We all know that the older we get the worse our memory becomes but one thing we always seem to remember are the lyrics to songs we might have learnt a long time ago.
How did I start singing?
When someone ask me how long I have been singing my reply is always “my whole life”! I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing and honestly, I’m glad my parents got me involved in it from a young age. My desire to sing started from constantly attending church and seeing the effect the church choir has on people. I wanted to have the same effect on people; wanted to be able to have people so memorized by me and just listen to the words I sing. I started by joining the choir at my primary school and performing in front of the school and going on school trips performing for other parents and school. The best part about all this was after we have finished our performance; I was surrounded by people who understand me and had the same interest as me, so it wasn’t hard to get along with people. Now though I didn’t pursue singing as a career, I won’t call it a hobby but rather a part of me. But you never know, you might see me on TV one day!
What age is best to start my kid in music?
Honestly, there is no specific age to start your kid in music and you can start from the moment they’re born. I don’t mean start teaching them how to sing before they can talk but have them listen to songs as from that young age, their development will improve a lot quicker than kids that are shown to not grow up with music. For babies, toddlers and pre-school children, here are some great activity class providers around Leeds who offer lots of musical fun!
As your child gets older you might consider sending them to singing & music groups, getting them involved in the school choir, or consider a music or singing tutor.
Your child could be the next Whitney Houston or Aretha Franklin. You have to give them a chance to express themselves. Let them sing and explore their creative side. I promise you, you will not regret it.
Hope this helps!
