I moved to this area nearly 4 years ago, after spending the best part of 20 years in North Leeds. Many friends were surprised that I wanted to jump ship, but with the allure of getting a lot more for your money than in some of the North Leeds suburbs, we decided to make the move. I am SO glad that I did, we have honestly hand on heart never looked back. Here are five of the reasons why we think Rothwell, and the surrounding areas of Woodlesford, Oulton and Methley, are such a nice place to live.
Our family LOVES to get outdoors, and we have loads of great walks and bike rides right on the doorstep. From our house we can go along the canal (there are some great walks from Lemonroyd Marina), visit RSPB St Aidans, head to Methley, and even get to the city centre. Rothwell sits right on the Transpenine Trail, with good links to walking and cycling in the wider Wakefield area too.

Rothwell is positioned brilliantly for both the M1 and M62, so if your workplace involves a commute, it’s a great place to be positioned. Woodlesford train station offers trains to Leeds City Centre every half an hour, and it’s only a 9 minute journey. You’re positioned right in the middle of Leeds and Wakefiled City, so can go off shopping to your hearts content in either, with the White Rose and Junction 32 also just a short drive away.
As well as plenty of decent pubs in Rothwell and Woodlesford, The Boundary House in Methley offers great food and a range of events in their rather fantastic Beer Garden. For something with more of an evening feel, Tobias on Town Street and Salto in Woodlesford offer a range of great drinks and cocktails. There are some great restaurants too, with Salute, Zoya, Wood Fire Dine and Dill & Bay my particular favourites.
Springhead Park is SUCH a lovely place to visit, with playing fields, an aviary, tennis courts, a little stream and a cafe just some of the attractions there. It also recently topped our Mumbler recommended list of the Best Under 5 Playground in Leeds!
If people don’t know where Rothwell is, they might well know Oulton Hall. The golf course is a favourite for many locals, and the spa and restaurant is great for a treat. Iveridge Hall is a great local fitness club, with many members attending for the community feel there.
Children can enjoy a visit to Swithens Farm, a swim at Rothwell Leisure Centre or participate in the huge range of children’s classes and groups in the local area.
