Join in with the city’s biggest-ever bug hunt – and win prizes for walking in the park
We all know it’s good to be active. Children who are active for at least an hour every day are building strong bones, reducing their risk of getting ill, and giving their mental wellbeing a proper boost.
But sometimes an extra nudge can really help to get us moving….
So what if, by getting active as a family in your local park, you could also meet amazing creatures – like giant ladybirds or fearsome dinosaurs? Or, even better, win an iPad?
By taking part in the Love Exploring Leeds Inter-School Challenge, you’ll win points just for walking in the park. Points mean prizes for your child’s school – and the family with the most points will win an iPad.
The Love Exploring Leeds Inter-School Challenge is citywide, and runs until June 6. Every school that takes part will win a prize.
Download the free Love Exploring app to join in, then link up to your school via the dropdown menu at the profile button. You can also view a live league table to see how your school is doing in the charts.
The Love Exploring app uses the magic of augmented reality to bring to life amazing sights on a smart phone, including the brand-new Mega Mini-beast game, and a Dinosaur Safari. There’s also an interactive quiz for each game, linked to the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
Choose a game in a park near you, and for every 100m you walk, and every quiz question you answer correctly, you’ll score points for your school (and yourself). Games are available in 12+ parks in Leeds, including Roundhay, Temple Newsam, Horsforth Hall, Middleton, Meanwood, Potternewton and Golden Acre, as well as the city centre.
So far, almost 7,000 people in Leeds have downloaded the app, which was brought to the city by Active Leeds and Public Health to inspire people to get out and explore their local green spaces.
There’s also a range of brilliant learning resources to support the challenge, offering a glimpse into the hidden world of Leeds Museums and Galleries’ insect collection.
Look out for special events in your local park and library to promote the Challenge over May half-term. And get ready to explore the Solar System this summer on the Love Exploring Space Walk…it’ll be out of this world.
