Did you know that barbers used to do more than cut your hair? Until the nineteenth century they were known as barber-surgeons and offered services such as pulling teeth, cutting out hangnails, setting fractures, giving enemas, and lancing abscesses. It’s hard to imagine going in for a short, back and sides and leaving with two less teeth!
Thackrays October half term event ‘Bloody Barbers and Splatted Surgeons’ offers talks, tours and uses items from our collection to tell the story of the barber-surgeons. The event will run from Mon, 24 October 2022 – Sun, 30 October 2022 at various times throughout the day and is included in the cost of your entry ticket!
If that all seems a bit of a fright, how about something merry and bright? We’re rhyming already, which can only mean one thing – Christmas is coming. This festive season, Father Christmas needs your help! In an awful accident, his first-aid kit has fallen off his sleigh and
everything inside is missing!
Join us this December as you journey around the museum collecting ingredients, taking part in some winter crafts and have photographs on our very own Thackray sleigh. Then meet the man himself under the twinkly lights of our Apothecary Shop for some festive stories and
a special gift to take home. This event is running from Sat, 3 December 2022 – Fri, 23 December 2022 and should be booked to ensure a space!
Thackray Museum of Medicine is open daily 10am-5pm. Two hours minimum are advised for a full tour of the museum.
Tickets are for 12 months- so you can come as often as you like, and enjoy BOTH our October and Christmas events. Under 5s are free. Entry to Sparks! Play Area is free with an adult ticket.
